Picture books are books that tell stories with a combination of text and illustrations. They are typically shorter works but not necessarily always simple to read. There are picture books in both fiction and nonfiction and cover a range of interest from children as young as toddler age all the way through middle school and beyond.
Early readers are designed for children around and 5 and older who are learning how to read independently. They tell simple stories or explore concepts of word and letter sounds. Some of them start to move into have short chapters to help with the transition to chapter books. Early chapter books are written for children around 5-8 years old and feature more complex stories than early readers and are a wonderful way for readers to build confidence and start to learn more of their preferences for authors and genres.
Middle grade books are written for children around 8-12 years old. They feature more complex characters and stories to capture the imagination of maturing readers who are beginning to find series, authors and genres they love.
