Assessment Notices
- Appeals will be accepted until 5 p.m. - Thursday, July 3, 2025.
- Appeal letters postmarked no later than Thursday, July 3, 2025, will be accepted.
It is the responsibility of the Fayette County Board of Assessors to appraise property at fair market value, in a uniform manner, as of January 1 of each year. This ensures that each property owner pays only their proportionate share of tax. All taxpayers will receive an assessment notice stating the Board of Assessors' current year's value. If the taxpayer disagrees with this new value, the taxpayer may file an appeal of the “assessment notice” during the appeal process only.
How to Appeal Your Tax Assessment
An appeal to the Board of Assessors can now be submitted on an Appeal of Assessment Form. This form is available here or can be obtained at the Assessor’s Office at 140 Stonewall Ave., West, Suite 108, Fayetteville, GA. An online appeal can be submitted by going to our GIS Mapping Website at:
https://qpublic.schneidercorp.com/Application.aspx?App=FayetteCountyGA&Layer=Parcels&PageType
Search for the parcel that you wish to appeal. When located, click on the “Appeal to Board of Assessors” button at the top of the record and follow the prompts. You will receive confirmation of submission on the website as well as by email. If you do not receive the confirmation, the appeal HAS NOT been filed. Written appeals must include the parcel ID number/map number, grounds for the appeal, the taxpayer's opinion of value, and should also include your election to appeal to the Board of Equalization, Hearing Officer, or Arbitration. It must be signed and dated and must be received by the Board of Assessors within 45 days from the date of the "Assessment Notice". It must be USPS postmarked; no metered mail accepted.
You may elect to have your appeal heard by one of the following: (if no election is made, then your election will be the Board of Equalization)
- The County Board of Equalization as to matters of taxability, uniformity of assessment, value, and, for residents, as to denials of homestead exemptions. Appealing through the Board of Equalization has no cost to the taxpayer unless the taxpayer hires an agent. The Board of Equalization is a three-member panel of Fayette County taxpayers. They are appointed by the Grand Jury and are not affiliated with the Board of Assessors. The Board of Equalization will set up an appointment with you to review your appeal. Their decision will override the Board of Assessors.
- An appeal election through Nonbinding Arbitration as to matters of value will require the property owner to submit a copy of a certified appraisal, which was performed not later than 9 months prior to the date of assessment(Jan 1). Arbitration requires the taxpayer to submit a $25 fee payable to the Clerk of the Superior Court and be prepared to pay all costs of the arbitrator (if the arbitrator does not side with the taxpayer).
- An appeal election through a Hearing Officer as to matters of value or uniformity of assessment is limited to (1) non-homestead real property (and contiguous real property) or (2) wireless personal property account(s) with a FMV in excess of $500,000. Hearing officers must be a Licensed Appraiser approved by the Ga Real Estate Commission and the Ga Real Estate Appraisers Board to serve as a Hearing Officer. The appeal through a hearing officer has no cost to the taxpayer unless the taxpayer hires an agent.
