Taxpayers can now apply for the homestead exemption beyond the historic deadline of April 1st; they may apply up to the end of their 45-day window to appeal their notice of assessment in the current tax year. If you owned and occupied your home as your primary residence on January 1st of the current tax year. New homeowners as of January 2nd of the current tax year can make application for exemption(s) January 1st of the following tax year - the end of the appeal period of that tax year. You must provide a copy of your recorded Warranty Deed or Settlement Statement and your Georgia Driver's License with your current address to make the application. By signing the application, the homeowner confirms they do not have an active application for another property or location. Refinancing does not remove exemptions. All exemptions require that the owner occupy the home on January 1 of the current tax year and must be applied for, in person or online, in the Assessors' Office to be effective in the calendar year in which the application is made. You are not required to file annually, but you are required to notify local officials if you become ineligible for the homestead exemption. Failure to do so may result in repayment of taxes, interest, and a penalty equal to 50 percent of the improperly received tax benefit. . If you see an exemption code on your tax bill that is not listed in the chart below, please contact the Assessors' Office for clarification. If the home is recently purchased, you will need to provide a copy of your Warranty Deed or Settlement Statement at the time of application for any exemption. You will also need to bring your Georgia Driver's License with your current address at the time of application for any Homestead Exemption.
