Residential Outdoor Burn Permit

The Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services offers residential burn permits at no cost to the citizens of Fayette County.

 Please follow Georgia Forestry Commission Guidelines when conducting an outdoor burn.

Residential Burn Permits will not be issued on days where the fire danger or fire danger forecast is high (class 4 or 5 is considered dangerous). If the day is a “high class fire day,” there will be a warning statement at the top of your area forecast.
1: Low fire danger
2: Moderate fire danger
3: High fire danger
4: Very High fire danger
5: Extreme fire danger

Outdoor burning is permitted annually from October 1 through April 30. It is not permitted from May 1 through September 30.

Key Rules for Outdoor Burning

  • When to Burn: Outdoor burning is allowed annually from October 1st to April 30th. It is not allowed from May 1st to September 30th.
  • Permit Required: You must complete the online process and get a permit before burning.
  • What you can burn: Leaves, clippings, brush, and limbs from your residential property, as well as tree limbs from storm damage, or for weed abatement and pest prevention.
Rules to follow:

  • Burning is allowed from 8:00 AM to sunset.
  • Fires must be at least 50 feet from any structure and 25 feet from any woodlands.
  • Fires must be constantly attended until extinguished.
  • You must have fire extinguishing equipment like a garden hose or shovel readily available.
  • The Fire Department can order a fire to be extinguished if a complaint is received.
Important Information

  • Contractors must obtain a commercial burn permit in person at the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services, located at 140 Stonewall Avenue - Suite 214, Fayetteville, GA 30214.
  • Burn permits may be denied for reasons other than fire danger, such as poor smoke dissipation or atmospheric conditions. If permits are not being issued, it is because conditions are not favorable.
