What Is Backflow?
Backflow occurs when water in a plumbing system flows in the opposite direction from its intended path. Changes in pressure, such as a broken water main or heavy water use nearby, can cause water to move backward through the pipes. When this happens, non-drinkable water or contaminants can be pulled into the public water supply. This situation, known as backflow, can make the water unsafe to drink.A Backflow Prevention Assembly is a mechanical device installed on the customer's service line, usually just downstream of the water meter, to prevent contaminated water from flowing back into the public distribution system.
Customer Responsibilities include maintaining and testing the backflow assembly annually (or as required). Testing must be performed by a Certified Backflow Assembly Tester (CBAT), and results are submitted as required by the Water System. Customers shall also repair or replace failed assemblies promptly to maintain compliance and protection.
BACKFLOW PREVENTION Program
Fayette County is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of water quality. Backflow prevention assemblies protect our potable water system and are required to be tested regularly by a CBAT in accordance with local regulations. The exact procedure varies depending on the type of assembly, such as a Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) or Double Check Valve (DCVA).
Post-test procedure
1. Record Test Results: The CBAT will record the results, showing whether your backflow prevention device passed or failed.
2. Make Repairs: If the device does not pass, the CBAT will explain what repairs are needed—such as replacing worn or damaged parts—to bring it into compliance.
3. Submit Report: The results shall be submitted by the CBAT using The Compliance Engine (TCE). For submittal instructions for TCE, see below.
