What’s the big deal with Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution?
Most pollutants carried in stormwater (illicit discharges) are called “non-point source (NPS) pollutants”. An NPS pollutant comes from many sources rather than a single concentrated source like an industrial plant. While point-source pollutants are regulated, non-point source pollutants are far more challenging to control.
As a result, stormwater pollution (or NPS pollution), is now the biggest threat to water quality in the United States. While each individual pollutant source might seem small, the pollutants add up once they are washed into the same place – our stormwater drainage systems.While this may sound scary, there’s good news…
