
Programmatic Accreditation Status
The Fayette County Fire & Emergency Services Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation standards through the Letter of Review Self-Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the National Registry’s Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.
Admission Policy
Minimum requirements for admission to the program include:
- Completed EMT or AEMT course – currently licensed in the state of Georgia, current National Registry Certification Preferred.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid driver’s license
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test.
- Must be able to meet hospital clinical file requirements for vaccinations including:

- MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Tdap, TB skin test, flu vaccine (seasonal)
- Acceptance of a vaccine declination will be determined by clinical affiliate.
Admission Priority

Admissions to educational programs are prioritized in the following order:
- Fayette County Fire & Emergency Services employees.
- Agency Paid Sponsorships.

Paramedic Job Description
A paramedic must be a confident, responsible leader with excellent judgment. The job requires quick decision-making and the ability to work independently in a constantly changing, high-stress environment. It also demands strong people skills to build rapport and communicate effectively with diverse groups.
Key Responsibilities:

Providing complete patient care, including cardiac monitoring, invasive procedures, and administering medications (including narcotics).

Managing the emergency scene and keeping accurate records.

Performing advanced procedures like EKGs, airway management, and providing IV fluids under a physician's direction.

Following strict safety protocols for handling and disposing of contaminated materials.
Required Skills & Physical Demands:

You must be able to perform basic math to calculate medication dosages and use the correct medical equipment.

The work is often dangerous, requiring you to respond to calls in high-risk areas.

This role requires self-confidence, emotional stability, and high physical stamina. You must have a valid driver's license and be able to lift, carry, or balance over 125 pounds at times.
Advanced Placement Policy

Experiential Learning/Transfer of Credits Policy
No experiential learning options or credits are offered by Fayette County Fire & Emergency Services educational programs.
Upon successful course completion and successful National Registry Paramedic certification, a student will receive 41 credit hours towards an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Paramedicine from Southern Crescent Technical College through an articulation agreement. All 41 hours are required for graduation from the program.
No credit hours are transferable, and no partial course credit will be offered. The program must be completed in its entirety for credit.
Minimum Contact/Credit Hours for Program Completion
Minimum contact hours for successful completion of the program include 405 classroom hours, 228 lab hours and 384 field/clinical/capstone hours totaling 1017 hours.
Upon successful completion of the program, successfully passing the NREMT cognitive exam the student will be awarded 41 credit hours towards an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Paramedicine from Southern Crescent Technical College if the student chooses to pursue a degree.

The student may elect to withdraw from the course in writing to the Program Director. The Program Director will notify the sponsoring agency (if applicable) of the student’s status.

Assignment of Clinical/Field/Capstone Experience Policy

Students must choose clinical, field, and capstone experiences from sites with existing agreements through Fayette County Fire & Emergency Services.

All Capstone Field Internships must be completed at Fayette County Fire & Emergency Services unless the program director grants written permission for an exception.

All requests for clinical/field experiences must be sent to the program director for approval. The program director will confirm or decline the request via email.

To cancel or reschedule an experience, students must call the program director at least one hour before the shift begins.

To receive credit, students must be an unpaid "third rider" during their clinical hours.
Occupational Risks
Being an EMS responder comes with inherent risks. Your work and training will take place in various locations, including classrooms, fire stations, and emergency scenes. You may face a variety of dangers, such as physical assault, vehicle crashes, infectious diseases, and psychological trauma. The job also carries the risk of injuries from lifting, sprains, and exposure to extreme temperatures or hazardous chemicals.

Technical Standards/Job Description
An Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) is a vital part of the emergency medical services (EMS) system, providing a link between the scene of an emergency and the hospital. AEMTs offer basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients. They function under medical oversight and are trained to perform interventions using basic and advanced equipment found on an ambulance.
Technical Standards and Scope of Practice:
Expanded Skills: AEMTs have a broader scope of practice compared to Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), allowing them to perform advanced procedures such as initiating peripheral intravenous (IV) lines, administering certain medications, advanced airway management techniques, and strict adherence to protocols. AEMTs perform their duties according to established medical protocols and standing orders, under the direction of a physician medical director. Accurate and precise documentation of patient care interventions is essential for AEMTs, ensuring continuity of care. AEMTs must be proficient in using a variety of basic and advanced medical equipment typically found on an ambulance. Provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients.
Patient Care Responsibilities:
Assess patients, determine necessary care, and deliver emergency services, administer life support, including controlling hemorrhage, performing cardiac care, and managing airways, provide care during patient transport, ensuring safe transportation to the appropriate facility, operate an ambulance according to safety policies and traffic laws. Work effectively with other healthcare professionals, including paramedics, EMTs, nurses, and physicians, possess excellent communication skills to interact with patients, families, and colleagues, demonstrate sound judgment and the ability to make rapid decisions in emergency situations. Maintain physical fitness for the demanding nature of the job and adapt to challenging environments. Maintain professionalism, adhere to ethical standards, and protect patient confidentiality and stay updated with the latest medical practices and technologies through ongoing training and education.

All Capstone Field Internships must be completed at Fayette County Fire & Emergency Services unless permission is given, in writing, by the program director.
All clinical/field/capstone requests will be sent to the program director and assigned only after receiving approval from the requested site. The requests and confirmation or declination of the request to the student will be done via email.
If a student must cancel or reschedule a clinical/field/capstone experience a phone call must be made to the program director at least one (1) hour prior to the beginning of the shift.
The student must not be paid staff and must always be the third rider for the hours to count towards the program required hours.

Learning is typically performed in a classroom, office, fire station, outdoors, and at the scene of emergency incidents.
