Adoptions

Obtaining a pet from the Fayette County Animal Shelter, is a simple and pleasant experience, potential adopters are encouraged to visit the shelter to see the different pets that are available. Our hours have been expanded to allow you time to come to the shelter, and many times staff will stay a little later to assist in the adoption.

The process starts when you find the pet that you like, you then fill out an application. Remember an application is not a contract but it is just the first step in the process. If the animal that you are interested in has been spayed or neutered and given a rabies vaccination it is possible that you could take them with you when you leave. In cases where the animal is not completely ready to leave, the application will be placed with the animal’s record. All adoptions are on a first come basis, which means that the 1st application received has the right of first refusal, and any applications after that will be notified should the prior application decline to adopt the pet.

Should you be the person to adopt the animal, a contract will then be filled out and payment will be made for the fee of the adoption. All animals adopted from Fayette County Animal Control will have the following prior to them leaving:

  • they will be spayed or neutered,
  • they will have a rabies vaccination and two other vaccinations,
  • they will be microchiped

All parties will be supplied with a certificate to take to one of several local vets that have agreed to participate in a program that allows for the first office visit to be waived and 25% discount on any services, excluding surgeries and grooming or boarding. New Pet owners are also encouraged to take their contract to PetSmart or Petco in Peachtree City where they will receive a coupon book filled with valuable coupons.
