The project will improve safety and reduce the congestion and wait time at the intersection. Safety is improved by providing turn lanes for improved access onto SR 85 from Corinth Rd. Congestion and wait time will be shortened via incorporation of turn lanes. The intersection will also be safer for pedestrians with the addition of crosswalks, pedestrian signals and ramps for handicap accessibility as required by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
This project will include a traffic signal. A permit for a traffic signal has been approved by DOT. Fayette County plans to install loop detectors to increase the signals' operating efficiency. The County has also acquired the necessary GDOT permit for the required ground work on SR 85 within the DOT Right-of-Way. The speed limit will remain as posted on both of these roads.
There will be no need for the County to acquire additional right-of-way or easements on this project. All road improvements will occur within the existing right-of-way.
The project construction cost is estimated at $196,452 and will be funded completely with Fayette County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax dollars. This is a construction-level cost estimate. The SPLOST was approved by the County citizens in 2003 and is in effect from April 2004 to March 2010. The firm of R.J. Haynie & Associates was awarded the bid and will be the Contractor for this project. Construction is scheduled for completion in April of 2010.
