The project will improve safety and reduce the congestion and wait time at the intersection. Safety is improved by providing turn lanes for improved access onto SR 92 from Gingercake Rd. Congestion and wait time will be shortened via incorporation of turn lanes. The intersection will also be safer for pedestrians with the addition of crosswalks and ramps for handicap accessibility. Pedestrian signals will be included if approved by GDOT
This project will include a traffic signal. A permit for a traffic signal has been approved by DOT. Fayette County plans to install loop detectors to increase the signals’ operating efficiency. The County has also acquired the necessary GDOT permit for the required ground work on SR 92 within the DOT Right-of-Way. The speed limit will remain as posted on both of these roads.
Due to the additional pavement needed for the turn lanes on Gingercake Rd. a small corner of additional right-of-way will be needed from one property. All other road improvements will occur within the existing right-of-way.
The project construction cost is estimated at $212,772 and will be funded completely with Fayette County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax dollars. This is a construction-level cost estimate. The SPLOST was approved by the County citizens in 2004 and is in effect from April 2005 until March 2010. The firm of R.J. Haynie & Associates was awarded the bid and will be the Contractor for this project. Construction is planned for the Spring of 2009.
