The alignment of Jenkins Road will be changed so that it intersects Sandy Creek Road at as close to 90° as possible. Some new Right-of-Way and pavement will be required for this adjustment. The second major improvement associated with this project is the addition of a left turn lanes on Sandy Creek Road for those vehicles accessing Jenkins Road.
The project will improve safety by increasing sight distances and providing more controlled left hand turns onto Jenkins Rd. This project does not include a traffic signal. Traffic on Jenkins Road will continue to be controlled with a stop sign. The speed limit will remain as posted on both of these roads.
Due to the additional pavement needed for the alignment of Jenkins Road, additional right-of-way and grading easements will be needed from at least one property. All other road improvements will occur within the existing right-of-way. Specific right-of-way needs will be determined as the design is finalized.
This project will be funded completely with Fayette County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax dollars. The SPLOST was approved by the County citizens in 2003 and is in effect from April 2004 to March 2010. Approval of the conceptual design for this project has been delayed until completion of the County's Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP), expected in the first quarter of 2010.
