The Jimmy Mayfield Widening project was started during summer of 2008 with major construction work continuing to this day. This work is to provide for a 4-lane highway section from South Jeff Davis to just south of Kingswood Way and Marion Boulevard on State Route 92.
The project is a joint venture with Fayette County and the City of Fayetteville. The Georgia Department of Transportation has also provided design input and other details concerning the State Route 92 portion. The work also includes 2 new traffic signals. One at South Jeff Davis Rd. and the other at Bradley Avenue and the entrance to the new City of Fayetteville Jail Center. The new 4 lane section will also have numerous median cross-overs for access to other side streets and the County Jail Center entrance. The new lanes will have new striping, sidewalks and landscaping in the medians.
The work is expected to be completed by June of 2009. The contracted construction cost is approximately $2.5 million. Southeastern Site Development was chosen as the general contractor for the job. This project is being totally funded by the City of Fayetteville and Fayette County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) dollars. The City and the County are cost sharing through their respective SPLOST fund accounts. The SPLOST was approved by the County citizens in 2004 and is in effect from April 2005 until March 2010.
