The West Fayetteville Parkway is a proposed thoroughfare designed to reduce traffic congestion within the City of Fayetteville by providing an alternative north/south route across the County. The Parkway will provide connectivity between S.R. 85 south (near Harp Road) and S.R. 92 north at Westbridge Road.
To expedite design and construction, the project is planned in three phases. Phase I begins at Cleveland Elementary on Lester Road, proceeds north across State Route 54, and ends at Sandy Creek Road between the Hospital and Hood Road (this phase is complete). Phase II will extend the parkway to the north and Phase III will extend the parkway to the south.
On December 9, 2010, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the concept alignment (shown below) for Phase III. Approval of the concept alignment allows County staff to work with a design engineer to develop a traffic study and then a preliminary (30 percent) design, schedule and cost estimate.
The traffic study will: 1) establish traffic projections on Phase 3 and confirm that a two-lane design will provide adequate level of service for the next 30 years; 2) assess impacts of Phase 3 on intersecting roads; and 3) study the major intersections and recommend the preferred method of intersection control.
The preliminary design will establish the specific alignment, conduct all necessary field investigations, and quantify impacts to environment, properties, and structures. A preliminary-level cost estimate and schedule will also be provided. Public input will be solicited as part of the preliminary design to ensure that applicable comments can be addressed as design progresses.
The preliminary design, schedule and cost estimate will then be presented to the BOC for consideration and approval before additional work is done.
