The Fayette County Marshal's Office was established in 1983 by the Board of Commissioners. The first Marshal was hired for the primary purpose of investigating alleged violations of County ordinances.
In July 1989 the Board of Commissioners consolidated Code Enforcement, Park Ranger, and the Safety Director into the Marshal's Office which became a Law Enforcement agency recognized by the Peace Officers Standard and Training Council of Georgia.
In 1998 a Marine Patrol Unit was created to patrol the county reservoirs and enforce boating safety laws and fishing regulations. Currently the Marshal’s Office has 2 boats that are used in patrolling the county reservoirs.
Today the Marshal's Office consists of a Patrol Division and a Code Enforcement Division.
