Fayetteville, Georgia - Helping the Helpers program was started in 2001 through a desire from members of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services to help the organizations and people of our community that provide aid to those in need of assistance. Public safety employees come in contact with people that need assistance and refer them to these organizations within the county. This program is a way for employees to help local non-profit organizations as needed, who handle distributing to people in need, sharing of surplus with other organizations and some may sell surplus items in a thrift shop and use the money from the sales to further assist by buying items needed or providing monetary assistance to those in need (assist with paying bills such as electric, heat, water, etc.).
The donated items of food, clothing, toys, personal care items, health care items and household items help many people and families. Members within the department deliver the items to the organizations or to a contact person in the department. The contact person inspects and sorts the items and provides the donator with a list of items donated. The donor receives a receipt from the organization(s) that receive the items.
