🐾 What to Do If You Find a Stray Animal in Fayette County

If you encounter a stray animal, please follow the appropriate steps to ensure its safety and proper handling:

📞 During Business Hours

Daily: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Call the Fayette County Animal Shelter at 770-631-7210 (Option 0). Provide your location and a description of the animal. An officer will be dispatched to your area as soon as possible.

🌙 After Business Hours

Contact Fayette County 911's non-emergency line at 770-461-4357. They will notify an officer to respond promptly.

🚗 If You Bring the Animal to the Shelter

Shelter hours are: Monday through Friday 11a.m. - 5p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 12p.m. - 5p.m.

You must present valid identification showing you reside in Fayette County.


If you do not have Fayette County ID, you must clearly state where the animal was found and why you picked it up. If possible you can stay with a stray animal and call for an officer to come to the location and pick up the animal.


If you are visiting or working in Fayette County and do not have local ID, the recommended action is to keep the animal in place and call for an officer to retrieve it.


⚠️ Please note: The shelter cannot accept animals found outside Fayette County. However, staff may assist in scanning for a microchip.

Providing false information about where an animal was found is considered a criminal offense and may result in a citation.
