Elections Poll Worker Information

The Fayette County Elections & Voter Registration is seeking highly motivated and dependable residents to serve as Poll Officials. The role requires commitment from 6:00 AM until approximately two hours after the polls close on Election Day. Please note that selected candidates must attend a mandatory training class before Election Day.

Poll Officials must report to their assigned precinct by 6:00 AM on Election Day and remain on duty until the polls have closed, all paperwork is completed, and the precinct is properly closed.

Managers and Assistant Managers are responsible for accompanying ballots and only one memory card back to the Fayette County Elections & Voter Registration once all closing poll activities are completed. All Poll Officials should anticipate a minimum 14-hour workday, which may involve extensive standing or sitting in one position.

All Poll Officials must attend one of our scheduled training classes, which are required before each election cycle. Poll Officials who complete the scheduled training only receive a stipend of $40.00 for the mandated in-person class if you work your assigned precinct. You will be notified if you are selected to attend a training class and to serve as a Poll Official or alternate Poll Official. All Poll Officials must agree to be paid via direct deposit. Applications remain on file for two years.

MANAGER $ 280.00

Must be a resident of Fayette county.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
Must have served in at least TWO prior election in Fayette County as an Assistant Manager.
Must attend and complete training class conducted by Fayette County Elections & Voter Registration before each election.
Must have your own transportation for picking up and delivering election supplies and equipment to the check-in center, and be able to lift 30 lbs.
Must assist with setting up polling place.

ASSISTANT MANAGER $ 215.00

Must be a resident of Fayette county.
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Must be willing to act as Poll Manager in their absence if requested by the Elections Department, including picking up and delivering election supplies and equipment to a check-in center (mandatory).
Must have served as a Clerk in at least TWO prior election in Fayette County.
Must have your own transportation for picking up and delivering election supplies and equipment, and be able to lift 30 lbs.
Must accompany Poll Manager on election night to deliver supplies and ballots to check–in center.
Must assist with setting up polling place.
Must attend and complete the training class conducted by Fayette County Elections & Voter Registration before each election.

CLERK $ 175.00

Must be a resident of Fayette County.
Must be at least 16 years of age.

Is this a volunteer position or paid position?

It is a paid volunteer position, poll workers are paid for service. Election Day poll worker is a paid volunteer position with Fayette County and does not include any benefits (for example: health insurance, paid sick leave, annual leave, paid holidays).

Poll Mangers - $280.00
Assistant Poll Manager - $215.00
Clerks - $175.00

What are the hours of work on Election Day?

Do I really have to work all day?

Yes, you have to work all day. Poll workers must be sworn in at the beginning of each Election Day. Once you have been sworn in at the polling place, you are not allowed to leave until all Election Day activities have been completed. If a poll worker must leave during the Election Day due to illness or emergency they must notify the elections office.

Do Poll Workers receive training?

All poll officers and poll workers shall be trained in all aspects of state and federal law applicable to conducting elections prior to each election. No poll officer or poll worker shall serve at any election unless they have received training.

The poll worker volunteers, who complete training but then do not work on Election Day, for any reason will not be paid for training.

How will I know the training schedule?

The election office will contact you via email with dates and times of training classes if you have been selected to work at their precinct.

I have worked several elections; do I still have to receive training before each election?

Yes. Regardless of how many times a person has worked as a poll worker, all poll workers are required by law to receive training before each election.

If I am working the poll, how do I vote? Can I leave to vote if I am not working at my precinct?

Poll workers are strongly encouraged to vote prior to Election Day if they are not working their home precinct. Poll workers should either vote early in person up to 21 days before the election at one of the advanced voting sites or vote absentee by mail up to 45 days prior to the election. Does the county provide lunch or snacks?

No. Some precinct workers bring potluck while others bring their own food and snacks. The Poll Manager should coordinate with all poll officials about the issue of food. Election Day poll workers are not allowed to leave the precinct to get food, please plan accordingly.

If I am a smoker, am I allowed any smoke breaks?

Poll workers are required to follow the smoking policy of each polling place facility. Some polling place facilities do not allow smoking on the premises. Any scheduled breaks are determined by the Poll Manager.

When are poll workers paid?

Fayette County Payroll issues checks by direct deposit. After the Elections office submits the payroll to HR and they complete their portion, it is then sent to Finance. Please allow approximately three to four weeks from the election date to receive the direct deposit. If you do not receive your paycheck within four weeks, please contact the Fayette County Elections Office.
