Fayette County operates one Heavy Rescue unit, a 2007 Freightliner FL70, which has no reserve backup and therefore must remain highly reliable. This apparatus carries critical equipment for extrication, specialized access, hazardous material mitigation, scene lighting, and also functions as the on‑scene SCBA refill station. Originally planned for 15 years of front‑line service, it is now scheduled for replacement with a more capable, technology‑updated unit. The Heavy Rescue responds to all vehicle or industrial accidents with entrapment, gas leaks and CO alarms, all residential and commercial fires, and second‑alarm brush fires.
